If I Only Had a...

I drew this for the Outsider Art Blog for a topic inspired from the Wizard of Oz. I actually haven't seen the movie in years but I do remember it creeping me out. I think it was the flying monkeys and the wicked witch... come to think of it the good witch creeped me out too. Definitely a creative movie to grab inspiration from when drawing though.

PULL pose

On the Animation Mentor alumni forums someone recently started a thread dedicated to posing. This week's theme was PULL. AM had provided us with many great characters that we could mess around with so I chose this big guy. This was a ton of fun, try it yourself. Just don't forget to thumbnail!

Short Film

Work In Progress

Here's a small clip for my animated film that I'm trying to finish from the classes I took at Animation Mentor. I've set a deadline for myself to take one shot from blocking to animation each week. Some shots are further along then others so there's a chance I might be able to finish sooner then I'm hoping. So far I've been sticking to the deadlines so if I continue on the same track I could finish the animation by the first week of January.

Throughout this process I've learned so much. Recently I've re-learned how important it is to have others look at your work. When you're telling a story for an audience I think it's generally a good idea to have a small audience look at it from time to time before you settle on your ideas. If you go through the entire process without feedback it could very well fall flat where you yourself intended something to resonate... possibly your entire message. That would totally suck! But making mistakes and learning from them is a part of growing so I think it's very important to show others your work, mistakes and all.

On another note, it's also good to be confident in the choices you've made that you feel strengthen your story. Sometimes it's more important to push along and finish without second guessing yourself and your choices. But like Shawn Kelly mentioned in one of the lectures, if 3 people make the same comment about your work, you should seriously consider taking their advice.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Night Cap

This week I attempted a piece for the ten second club but didn't make it by the deadline... I was a day late. Ah well... the reason behind tackling this piece was to take a step away from my short film to refresh. I've been looking at the same characters and ideas for so long I needed a small breath of fresh air. I'm going to refine and clean this piece up a little bit more then I'm back off to my film.

Edit: Ha ha! I tried submitting it anyway and it went through... hopefully it'll still be accepted? We'll see.

Something I sketched up while eating pizza at my sister's house last night. This big guy has no sense of balance...
And this little guy has no sense at all... poor guy.

Scarecrow

Last topic before finishing Animation Mentor was scarecrow come to life. Since this is the last week before I finish AM, I won't have anymore access to the student forums... but there will be an alumni forum for graduates. Woohoo! ;) There's also a great weekly sketch blog called Outsider Art Club. If you wanna' get in with some talented guys, I recommend contributing if you've got the time. Some nice inspiration from that spot.

Happy Anniversary Jasmin!

Yesterday was my one year wedding anniversary! So we threw a barbecue and invited a few people to celebrate. We had a ton of fun so thanks for comin' and spendin' some time with us of ya' did. Next time we'll use a propaine grill (which our landlord just mentioned that they had in the garage that they don't mind us using... great, huh!?)... so next time we won't have anyone's hands burst into flames from picking up the loose grill rack that kept falling into the charcoal. Heh! He's alright though. :) ... it sure didn't effect his bag-tossing in 'cornhole'.
Anyway, here's the anniversary card that I drew for Jasmin.
It hasn't even felt like it's been a year. It felt like we were planning for the wedding just a few days ago.

Jasmin really liked the pencil version of the sketch so I decided to post that up as well. Sorry I didn't draw the feet... I was actually thinking of cutting us off above the knees but I was actually happy with how her legs ended up so I kept them in the frame.

Sketch theme this week was to design some mariachis so I drew these guys up before I went to sleep. Could have probably varied things up a bit... especially the curly 'bigote' under his nose. Also could have played with different sizes for the hat. Maybe some tiny ones... was fun sketching these caballeros though.

This is a pretty late one... this was for the sketch thread last week on the Animation Mentor forums. The theme was garbage man and Jasmin gave me a nice idea to incorporate the 'One man's junk is another man's treasure' idea. I don't know who'd throw away a perfectly good ink marker anyway... who WOULDN'T treasure that??? ;P

Thanks fer stoppin' by!

Cuatro

AM Sketch:Musician
-
I had some fun playin' around with this guy. I tried incorporating a sense of rhythm in the lines with him to stay consistent with the theme of this week's topic. I also tried to give it some boricua culture with the cuatro, the ruffled shirt and the hat but I don't think it's coming across very well... maybe if I removed the feather... I'll try to do some more sketches if I have some extra time from my short.
-
Also if you didn't notice, it's very Hirschfeld influenced... :P
Keep drawing and learning!

Man, the Comic Convention was a BLAST!!!
It was great to put faces to so many bloggers and get to meet such inspiring artists. All of you guys have so much great work! Bruno, Javi, Bob (Boob) had a successful weekend with their prints and sketchbooks. I also couldn't believe the Animation Mentor booth just happened to be right in front of the booth where my buds were stationed. AWESOME! Thanks for buying all of their sketchbooks Bobby, you rock! I met Bobby and Shawn, Glen McIntosh, Ethan Hurd, Stephen Silver and Dean Yeagle, Chris Sanders, Erick Goldberg... WOW! And getting together with the AM staff and students was SO surreal. Every single one of them had such a friendly personality, and Bobby and Shawn's energy was so motivating. If you're attending AM right now you totally need to get out there and physically meet some of your fellow AM-ers. The experience is one I'll never forget. I'm so ready to get back to work on my short film and continue sketching as much as possible. Such an incredible experience to meet so many Animation Mentors and Mentees.
-
Thanks guys for making it such a unique and wonderful Comic Con!
I can't wait to do it again!

COMIC Con!

I'm so excited to be going to San Diego for the Comic Convention this THURSDAY! In my X-citement, I've drawn Jasmin's favorite comic book character of all time... yeah, she's a geek... more so then me I have to admit. :P I've also posted the sketch 'cause that's the fun part.
-
So, I'll be hanging around the Animation Mentor booth on Thursday from 2:00 - 4:00 if you wanna' stop by and let me promote the school to you... or if you just want to say hi. :) Other then that I'll be fully enjoying the weekend, geeking out with artists and friends... and spending tons of money I don't have.
-
Which reminds me, a bunch of my friends will be selling their first line of sketchbooks. Make sure to go visit their table and check out their work, and buy their books if you like what you see. They will be stationed at Exhibitor Table E6. The artists are 'Boob', Bruno, Darryl, Javi, Sam, and Bob. I'm not sure if I got everyone who's selling art at that table, so I'm sorry if I missed anyone.
-
Go check 'em out and see you there!

Thief

Another for the AM sketch thread.
-
So once upon a time there was a lonely man. From his youth he had to fend for himself. With no one to look after him as a child he was forced to take from others what he needed for survival. Until one day someone tried taking from him the only thing he cared most about... his own life.
-
Now he's out for revenge and the name of the man who he is out to kill is engraved on the blade of the knife until it serves it's one purpose.
-
...true story. :P

2D animation test

-
I've been working on this pencil test for a few months now. I wanted to finish it before this quarter ended but other projects made focusing on it near impossible. It's the first 4 seconds of an 11 second dialogue clip from the movie 'Mean Girls'. Hopefully I can get the rest of it done within the next week before getting so wrapped up into beginning animation on my short.

Critiques always welcomed!

Fishies

AM Weekly Sketch
- draw your interpretation of a flying fish

I tried to add a little more texture to the page. It's an area that I haven't explored much before and I think it's a good idea to mess around with it in order to add some appeal and eh-stuffs!
Also, an area I'm weak in is 'dynamic' poses. I tend to stay away from angles that are difficult to draw... not good.
Well, here are 'Flying Fish' for now. Next batch of drawings should show improvement... that's the goal!

Marionette

AM Weekly Sketch
- to draw a marionette of a jester

If I didn't take this time to draw for the weekly sketch I would totally be at a loss. I have so much animation to do for class that this is a great way to keep drawing at the same time advancing my animation.

Animation Showdown!

At Animation Mentor, a fellow student (Jeff Kim) has started this animation thing over the break where we have 3 hours (and about 60 frames) to animate our idea based on a topic that he supplies. It's a great way to get in some foundational practice that focuses on strengthening your idea rather then worrying about polish. The topic of this piece was "I'M NOT TALKING TO YOU ANYMORE." This is what I came up with after 3 hours of planning and blocking.
